Monday Media Mutiny Event No. 2!

It’s time for WAM! Vancouver’s second installment of MONDAY MEDIA MUTINY.

Location: The Grind Cafe 4124 Main Street

Time: 7-9 pm

This month, get ready for more creative culture-jamming with DIY bookmarks and postcards that can be discreetly slipped inside magazines and other publications featuring sexist and misogynistic content. Their purpose is to challenge rampant objectification of women and to provoke conscious thought in fellow consumers, particularly in young people, who are especially vulnerable to manipulative messages and imagery in the media.

Postcard/bookmark messages can be critical, inspiring, sarcastic, encouraging, eye-opening, funny, or all of the above and more! Quotes or statistics can be included, or you can just write your thoughts on the subject in your own words.

We will provide all the necessary supplies for making postcards and bookmarks – blank cardstock, black and multicolored permanent markers, scissors, etc. You are welcome to bring your own art supplies in addition if you’d like.

Monday Media Mutiny is a once-monthly feminist event organized by Women, Action, & the Media (WAM!) Vancouver, in which interested folks meet to perform a quick action that fights back against sexist representations of women in the media. At the present time, these events take place on the third Monday of each month at 7pm.

Date: Jan. 21, 2013

Time: 7-9 PM

Location: Rhizome Cafe @ 317 E. Broadway

“Mutiny is a conspiracy among members of a group of similarly situated individuals … to openly oppose, change or overthrow an authority to which they are subject. The term is commonly used for a rebellion among members of the military against their superior officer(s), but can also occasionally refer to any type of rebellion against an authority figure.”

Every third Monday of the month*, WAM! Vancouver will be hosting a Media Mutiny event. It will be an opportunity for feminists in Vancouverto gather together in a friendly space, gather our energies and ideas, and put it all towards an action that allows us to challenge the BS we see all around us, in various forms of sexist and misogynist media.

All costs for the activity are covered. We will be gathering at Rhizome Cafe, so we recommend giving them a wee bit of your business (a tea, a soup, whatever you fancy). All are welcome. If you don’t feel like buying anything, don’t!

The first installment of Media Mutiny Monday:

RAD DIY FEMINIST STICKER MAKING EXTRAVAGANZA

– We will supply the sticker-making stuff (the basics: sticker material, markers, etc)

– Bring your ideas and any other supplies you may wish to incorporate into a DIY sticker (old magazines, for example, may interest some people)

– We will all get together and make stickers with whatever messages we want on them, and then go out into the world and stick away!

*If there’s another day of the week that works better for you, please let us know! (Post here or email us -wamvancouver@gmail.com). We’re starting on Mondays, but we will move these gatherings to another day if it works better.
